Maria. Present day. Alucard.

“Centuries I waited for you and now…”

“Now”, he echoed back to her.

“And what of it?” she asked.

“I am here as you expected me to be and as I allowed myself to be”

The space between them filled with a silence that only they both knew. Maria continued to walk through the dense woodland. She knew he felt her as much as she felt him, even though centuries had passed between them.

“It was easy to find you”

He was, as always, near water. “As soon as I felt—". For a second, Maria felt stifled by her emotions that rose upwards to her chest. But this time she chose not to swallow them down. “You feel different”.

She saw him, from a distance, with her immortal eyes. Alucard sat on a flat rock by the side of a small stream, his long, dark coat draped over his shoulder. Alucard did not turn on her approach. Or speak. Maria stood beside him in silence. The only sound was the faint trickle of the stream and the occasional breeze that rushed through the trees above their heads.  She looked down at the water, but her reflection didn’t catch her eye. His did.

He still looked like a ghost. Pale, distant. She wondered if he carried memories like she carried hers.

“I thought you’d be away from the sun at this hour”, she said finally. Her voice didn’t shake. She had practised this meeting for years. And yet, beneath, she still felt it, the trembling.

Alucard didn’t answer at first. Then. “The sun does not bother me as much at this hour”

There was a pause.

“Neither does the past”

She wanted to tell him she dreamed of the past less and less now. That Katerina still sent letters. That blood tasted differently depending on how guilty she felt that day. That sometimes, she missed herself so deeply it felt like a second death. But she said none of it. Instead, she sat down beside him, not close enough to touch.

“You came a long way,” he said.

“Maybe,” she murmured. “Or maybe I just stopped running.”

The corner of his mouth lifted, barely. Not quite a smile. Maria looked at the stream again. “I still hate what I am,” she admitted. He nodded once, as if that sentence belonged to him too.

Silence settled between them again. Not uncomfortable. Just... waiting.

Then she spoke, voice softer now. “That night. In the library. You remember?”

“I remember,” he said immediately.

She glanced sideways. “You kissed me.”

He didn’t deny it. “You were still warm.”

“And you were still lying to yourself.”

Alucard looked away, but not in shame. “You were human. Bright. Alive. I was...none of those things. Unworthy of you”

Maria tilted her head. “You thought you’d ruin me.”

“I knew I would,” he said, his voice now strained.

“And I thought,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, “that for once, someone wanted me. Not because I was brave. Not because I had power. Just... me.”

The wind tugged gently at the hem of her coat. Her hands stayed still in her lap.

“I left before you woke,” he said after a brief silence.  “Because if I had stayed... I wouldn’t have been able to walk away.”

She nodded. “And now?”

He looked at her. Really looked at her. Not with hunger but a knowing.

“Now,” he said quietly, “you wouldn’t let me.”

They didn’t move closer. They didn’t have to.

Maria Renard {Witch-Vampire} {Disciples of the Moon's Tear} ~ Eternally bound to Alucard Tepes

Maria was quiet for a long moment. There were too many questions.

Perhaps that was the trouble with returning to someone after centuries. There was an expectation that all that time apart must have produced unanswered questions. That somewhere along the way, she must have decided exactly why she had come, what she wanted, and what she intended to do with the feelings she had buried for so long.

She hadn't.

The forest remained still around them. The river continued to flow effortlessly over the pebbles and around the rocks, the sound of the water filling the silence between them.

“You ask a great deal of questions,” she said at last. There was no accusation in her voice. If anything, there was a trace of amusement.

Maria looked back towards the water.

“I don't know if I came here because I missed you. I don't know if I came because I wanted answers. I had no questions in my mind to ask. And I certainly did not come here with some carefully considered intention.”

Her fingers moved slightly against her knee.

“I simply found myself walking towards you.”

She finally turned to look at him.

“And perhaps that is the only answer I will give you”

A small silence passed between them.

“You want to know if I longed for you?”

She turned her gaze to him.

“I did. For a very long time and for a very long time I hated that I did.”

Her eyes drifted towards the river again.

“I remembered the library. I remembered the girl I was then. Human. Young. Certain that she understood far more than she actually did.”

A faint smile touched her lips.

“But that girl is not sitting beside you now.”

Maria looked at him.

“Whatever happened in that library belongs to her. I remember the feeling of our kiss. I remember how it felt watching you leave”

Her voice became quieter.

“But I am not sixteen anymore, and neither am I sweet. So just... stop. Stop avoiding how you're feeling by overcompensating with question after question.

She paused before speaking again.

“Centuries have passed. I have changed. You have changed. And whatever you thought you were protecting that girl from all those years ago, there is no need to protect her anymore.”

Maria held his gaze.

“Perhaps that is why I came. Not because I wanted to find an answer, and not because I came seeking some grand reunion. Simply because, after all this time, I want to know if there is anything remaining between us”.

Her gaze dropped briefly to her hands.

“As for whether I came here out of love or hatred…”

A faint smile appeared.

“If it were hatred, Alucard, I doubt I would have come this far.”

She turned towards him fully now.

“You say you are glad I came.”

A pause.

“Then let me simply be here.”

Her voice softened.

“No questions. No explanations.”

Maria looked towards the river once more.

“I have spent enough of my life running from what I feel.”

Her eyes returned to him.

“I don't intend to run tonight. Not from you. Not from us”.

Alucard Tepes Eternally Bound To Maria Renard (Disciples Of The Moons Tear)

Alucard, looked into Maria's eyes. The connection they had was binding. "And Now?"

"Why, is it that you despise whom you are? He looked at her with a million things he could have, would have said, if the moment was correct. Not Now.

So, you say you quit running, yet you are here before my eyes. Did you mean to come here? Was it by chance? Did you feel a sense of longing for me? Is that what has brought you here? Maria?

Curiosity? To go back down memory lane? What brings you here after all these years? Did you long for me? He looked at her intensely.

You come to me a woman now. A beautiful intelligent woman. I am without words, for I do not wish to offend you.

In the past few years, your memory has never escaped me. You are a part of me, that I cannot understand.

Did you come here out of memories, or something deeper, more meaningful?

He walked around the room still surprised to see the beautiful adult vampiric version of her.

He did not wish to offend her nor scare her away. Her presence was enough for in him in that moment.

Alucard awaited answers from Maria, It had been so long ago. Why now after so long did she travel great distances, to converse with him.

Maria, yes I remember the night in the library. It is a part of my memory I can't shake. Perhaps, it is because I choose not to.

Those memories I have deep inside of my heart and mind. I could never forget them, nor you. That would be impossible. You have entered my head and my heart long ago.

My question is what do we do with this? What is your desire to do with this.

Did you come to me out of love or hatred? For both, I would not chastise thee, Maria.

He stood there looking at the once awkward child, who had turned into a beauty. Was she his? He did not know.

This meeting of the minds had once seemed to disappear. Yet, here she was.

Confusion set in, due to her travels to come to him being far, the journey great.

You now come to me now exactly as I am. I have never for one second forgotten you Maria,

Here you are, after long journey.

I know I frightened you back then, was never my intention.

For that I hope you can forgive me. Forgive? Such a huge favor of me to ask of you.

I am here now, immersed in your presence.

A familiarity that I admit has never left my heart or mind.

Here you stand here before me. What are you intentions? You have made a long journey to find me, Why have you come?

Do not take that the wrong way, Maria. I am delighted you've come.

I see a woman now, not a child. I admit, I have deep feelings for you. But can you handle that?

If not, I understand. I am simply just glad you have honored me with you presence, my sweet Maria.

You are now what I am. This pleases me. Although you detest what you have become.

I am here with you Maria. I am so happy you have made journey to me.

Do you know why you are here? Is it chance? Have you come to accept me for what I am?

He looked at her intensely.
